Tax Saving Estimator
For most employed Australians, donating to NZF means real money back from the ATO at tax time. NZF holds Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. All donations above $2 are fully tax deductible. If you are a sole trader or run a business, your donation reduces the tax you owe instead.

Your donation is paid in full. It is a complete act of worship. Your obligation is met the moment you pay.
Assuming no other tax liabilities
Is it permissible to claim a tax deduction on my Zakat or donation to NZF?
Yes, and scholars generally consider this permissible. Your Zakat obligation is fulfilled the moment you pay it with sincere intention (niyyah). That act is complete in itself.
Any refund you receive or tax you save comes from the ATO, not from NZF. It is the government returning tax you have already paid because you gave to charity. Your donation reaches NZF in full and is not reduced in any way. These are two separate transactions involving two different parties.
NZF holds Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status in Australia, making all donations above $2 fully tax deductible. If you donate online through the NZF website, your tax receipt is issued automatically. If you pay by bank transfer, you can request your receipt at nzf.org.au/tax-receipt.
Not comfortable claiming your tax back?
That is okay. But please do not leave it. Claim it and give it away as Sadaqah. The refund is yours by law. Leaving it with the ATO helps no one. Claiming it and giving it as voluntary charity earns you the reward of a second act of giving. Your Zakat was paid in full. This is extra.
NZF holds DGR Item 1 status. Donations are deductible under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. Minimum donation for DGR deductibility is $2.
